Work on the Important as well as the Urgent

First – What is important to you?

When you lose your income (for example when you are made redundant), you may consider your most important priority is replacing that income.

However, it is more accurate to say this is your most urgent priority rather than your most important priority?

You could say this is just semantics.

However, if you can get the right perspective on the distinction between the ‘urgent’ and the ‘important’, there is a good chance you can start working on setting up a much better future.

But first what is ‘important’ to you – what would be great?

For many, their ‘important’ revolves around securing their income into the future.

Life’s too short to be existing rather than living. We are human beings not human doings!

Second – what does your ‘urgent’ look like?

An increasing number of people are suffering the tyranny of the ‘urgent’.

Constant change means that

  • Jobs are becoming shorter-term and less secure
    • Next time you are on LinkedIn look at the average length of time people now spend in a job
    • What happens to your savings ‘between jobs’?
    • How long do people typically spend trying to find another job?
    • How many job applications do you have to submit before securing another job?
    • Why are you accepting the next job – because it’s ideal or because you need to earn income?
    • How long will the next job last?
    • Is this the way you want to continue to live?
  • The plus 50 age group typically struggles to find an ideal job
    • And what if you don’t want to keep working flat out?
    • How much capital do you need to retire well given current rates of return?
  • What confidence do you have in your future income?

Third – why not set aside a small amount of time each day to set up a better future?

Yes But

“Yes But” are the 2 words that prevent most people from achieving the life they’d really like to be living in a few short years.

Typical “Yes But’s”

  • I don’t have time
  • I haven’t come up with a great idea yet
    • Thank goodness! Perfect!
    • Build your network and
      • You will discover ideas (the best starting point is often not an idea that you generate by yourself)
      • You will find mentors to run your newly discovered ideas past
    • Any idea you discover is probably going to need a network to be successful
      • So spending your time developing your asset is going to be a worthwhile investment of your time
  • I have to take care of my ‘urgent’ first. Then I’ll start thinking about how to achieve what’s important to me
    • Temporary has a nasty habit of becoming permanent!
    • With this kind of thinking you are likely to always be stuck dealing with the urgent
    • Many others have the same kind of urgent pressures as you
      • Yet they are determined to employ mini-habits to progress toward the life they really want

Fourth – what are your options?

You could jump straight out of employment into your own business – very risky and will it really help you achieve the life you are looking for?

You could put aside the time to do some extra study – say an MBA

  • How much time per week would you need to invest – and for how many years?
  • What would the financial cost be?
  • What would this ‘piece of paper’ do for you in terms of progressing you toward the way you’d like to be living in a few years?

Are you looking for pleasing methods – or pleasing results?

Begin with the end in mind

The ideal starting point is to learn how to build an exponentially growing network of influential Know Like and Trust relationships because in the process….

  • You are likely to discover leveragable ideas
  • You are likely to find ways to improve your temporary income (from your current business or job) through advocacy
  • You will have the ability to run new ideas past those you trust and respect (mentors and coaches)
  • You will learn invaluable skills suited to the current business environment
  • You will learn a great deal about what others you respect are doing and why

Advocacy & Community

Advocacy & Community

Advocacy is more powerful than mere referral
It is the Active support of an idea
!

What do we mean by ‘advocacy’?

When you know, like and trust someone and you are having a conversation with another person in business who raises a problem they would desperately like to solve and you say something like:

“I can’t believe you just said that! I know someone who specialises in solving exactly that problem.

From my experience with them, it would be great for you to have a quick chat with them to gain their thoughts on your issue.

Also, I know they are very happy to help people who may not be ready to proceed just yet.

As you might expect, they always have a great deal of work on but if you like I can have a chat and see how they are placed. “

When they say ‘yes’ (they’d like to meet with the person you are advocating for), you then contact the person you are advocating for and then get back to the person who may be able to use their services.

You proactively work to arrange the meeting (even though you have no immediate direct benefit).

Why does Advocacy work so well?

  • Because you are not selling yourself!
  • Instead, you are enthusiastically promoting someone else.
  • And as we all know only too well:
    • Anyone can promote anyone except themselves!
  • When you genuinely trust that someone you have come to know can be of invaluable help to someone else, it is very easy to get excited about ‘going the extra mile’ to advocate for them
  • The payback for you putting in this effort is that you build enormous trust with the person you are advocating for and
    • The law of reciprocity says they will advocate for you
      • And often they reciprocate in a much bigger way than you could have possibly imagined!

You can only genuinely be excited about advocating for someone you like and trust

What is trust and how is it built?

When someone in business is considering a potential business partner, employee, supplier, consultant or customer, what do they most want to know about the candidates before them?

  • Do they have integrity (will they do what they say they are going to)?
  • Are they consistent?
  • Are they good team players?
  • Are they prepared to ‘go the extra mile’?
  • Are they loyal?
  • What is their emotional intelligence like?
  • Do they have initiative and creativity?
  • Do they have leadership potential?
  • Do they have aligned values?

Many people “talk a good game” at the interview but turn out to be quite disappointing 6 months down the track.

When you are helping someone to build their network, over a period of time, you will come to know the answers to the above all-important questions.

As time goes on you begin to like and trust certain people because they continually demonstrate the right attributes to you.

You are going to be genuinely excited about promoting such people to others in business because you know they will do their best to perform (short and long term) – just as they have demonstrated when building their network with you.

So, in effect, when you advocate for someone you are doing 2 people a great favour

  • The person you are advocating for
  • The person you are advocating them to

Community

Working with like-minded others

It is incredibly uplifting, inspiring and motivating to be working in a community of like-minded others.

It’s great to be associated with influential and experienced leaders who want to help aspiring others.

It feels great to know you are making a difference to someone’s life and the only condition is that they “Pay it forward” (have you seen the movie?)

Your Attitude is the key

At the Connect Collaborative we encourage successful people to help others such as you

  • You don’t need to be currently in business
    • Often it pays to build your trusted relationships and in the process discover ideas and mentors that will help you choose a business that will help you live the way you’d like to live rather than becoming a slave to the business
  • You may already have a great job or income stream
    • Dig the well before you need the water!
    • Enhance what you are currently doing and build the network for future endeavours
    • Engage with a great community of like-minded others
  • You may lack confidence
    • Others can help
  • You may have failed in several ventures
    • Maybe what you were actually lacking was an advocating network and some good mentors?
  • Are you time poor?
    • When is that going to change?
    • Perhaps it’s worth thinking about how you are spending your time
  • What are your options for setting up a better future?
    • Start by building a relationship/trust-based network and see what ideas you discover – you may be pleasantly surprised

  • You will meet with others online and learn hints and tips about how to obtain better network building results
  • Be inspired by what others are doing and achieving
  • Hear a 20-minute presentation from a fellow collaborator about their business
    • These presentations are usually very inspiring as you learn about the creative things fellow entrepreneurs are doing

      • Will gain ideas from other successful business owners
      • Is a focus of advocacy for the next week

Special purpose online meetings around a particular theme
